First of all, What is Content?

Updated: Jun 23

What is content? What does a content writer do?  What about a content strategist? And what’s content marketing ? ... These are just some of the questions that come our way most often. That’s a lot to talk about in one post. They will have to come to you in a series of posts. For now, let’s go straight to the beginning and deal with the first of those queries.

What is content in this Digital Age?

Content in today’s context is actually ‘web content,’ a term that has come to shed the web part for obvious reasons. Web Content or simply Content as we know it today, is almost everything you see on your screens when you go online.

Simply put, it’s all the information — written word, images and videos — that populate your websites and social media accounts. To get a clearer picture, let’s look at the different types of content there are in our digital spaces.

Types of Content

  1. Text

  2. Image

  3. Audio

  4. Video

These are 4 basic types of content. However, you will often see them in different combinations on the web, depending on what the purpose of the content is. And they come in different forms, most of which, you’re going to realize, you are already quite familiar with.

Forms of content

Website Content, photographs, audio files, blog posts, articles, social media statuses, carousels, reels and shorts are some of the many forms they come in. Then there are podcasts, infographics, ebooks, case studies and the sort. Yes, these are different forms of content and this is only a part of a longer list.

What’s the purpose of content?

Content is mostly used to inform, educate and entertain online audiences. It has also become an essential part of modern-day marketing. It now helps businesses tell people about what they are selling. It can be used to give customers additional information about the product and services, or even the market on the whole.

Content is also used to build relationships with partners, customers and influencers. It can also go on to attract more customers thereby helping businesses expand.
