What is USP? Why is it Inevitable for Your Business?

In a market that’s gone way more digital than we ever imagined, businesses online are not quite different from street vendors shouting out about their wares. If your voice needs to be heard, it’s got to sound different from your competition. You should be able to project your USP.

What is USP

USP stands for Unique Selling Proposition, or Unique Selling Point. Strip away the jargon, and it is what makes your product or service different from the other businesses that are in competition with you. Simply put, it’s what makes it unique.

USP - Unique Selling Proposition

Why it matters in marketing

You know by now that customers have more choices than ever before. If your website, social media, and advertisements sound exactly like everyone else’s, people have no reason to remember your business.

A strong USP also leads your marketing efforts. Instead of trying to attract everyone and getting nowhere, your USP helps you speak to the people who are most likely to become customers. You can highlight your unique selling proposition/point on the homepage of your website, your about page, your Google business profile, your social media bio, your service pages, your social content, and your proposals and sales emails.

Why it is especially important for small businesses

Many small businesses assume that things like USPs are only for big brands. The truth is that big brands can survive on familiarity. Smaller ventures often cannot compete on price or advertising budgets. Without a USP, businesses often end up competing on lower prices alone, and that is not exactly a winning strategy.

What is your Unique Selling Proposition?

Would you be able to say what makes your business unique in your niche? What makes your business the one customers choose over your competitor? If what comes to your mind are things like: our products are of high quality, we offer great customer service, or we offer value for money, you may not have a USP, as yet. Those are things your business is expected to do. Now, if your bakery is the only vegan one in town, or that one cafe that is open till 11 pm, or yours is the only home-based preschool in the neighborhood that has adopted a Montessori curriculum, or the content writing you do uses not just SEO best practices but also the principles of journalism, you have a selling point that is unique to you. Can’t find yours? Worry not, you’re not alone. It’s an area most businesses struggle to identify and highlight, and it is not very complicated to work it out.
